John Papa Gros - The role of the sideman

11/30/2019

"I was a supporting musician first, a side man first. I was always a keyboard player in a band. So I knew that role very well of learning what my responsibilities were as a keyboardist, how to interact with the band as the keyboardist, how does the keyboard interact with the guitars, with the drums, how to support a singer. Make sure everything you do in your role supports who's paying you, because you want them to be the best they can. That's the role of a sideman." - John "Papa" Gros

Joel Cummins (Umphrey's McGee) - Vocal training

11/24/2019

"I think the biggest way that my vocal (training) impacted my keyboard work was really understanding the importance of voicing and how much of a difference it makes to… not just playing the chord, but where are you playing the chord on your instrument? What are the color notes? What is the high note that going to shine through? And how does that impact how it feels? And how does that impact how it pushes things along?" - Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee

The Doobie Brothers

11/21/2019

Still on a high after last night. I filmed an interview with John McFee of The Doobie Brothers. We discussed the band's just announced 50th anniversary tour with Michael McDonald, John's work with Elvis Costello, the multiple instruments he plays during every concert, and a lot more. I hope to have it posted in a few weeks. After the cameras were packed up, we kept talking music right up until showtime. Finally, an amazing concert. For a music geek like me, it was a fantastic day.

Film production by Jean-Paul Damé and Fire Horse Films.
