"For me the greatest guitar player ever: Jimi Hendrix. Innovative in sound, style, and musicianship. For me, no other guitarist has topped his songs and sound. When I was 15, my first serious boyfriend was a guitarist. So I heard Jimi constantly. I began to learn the solos and chords and sing them back slowly to my guy so he could learn them. What a training ground for my voice..." - client Taylor Dayne
"Commit to playing loud, soft, fast, slow and everything in between with conviction. Make intentional choices to drive and lift the music. More than anything, a performance starts in the mind. Are you IN the music or are you thinking about the stresses of life (bills, domestic issues, schedules)? Let the music take you away to a special place. By making that commitment, the performance and the music itself becomes more rewarding and meaningful." - client Rich Redmond
"Off stage I don't like having attention focused on myself. But when I get on stage I kind of take on the persona that I think every lead singer has to have. At that moment you visualize yourself as a bad ass. And that's what you portray and it makes for a good show. You believe in that music so much that it makes you feel like that." - Darcy Malone of Darcy Malone and The Tangle
"There’s something to be said for, musically speaking, being thrown into an environment that is not the usual or not the norm. You’re forced to be more creative." - Ranaan Meyer of clients Time for Three
"As a researcher, a historian, and a writer, as I went through the journey of learning about drumming, I realized that is was increasingly important to preserve our musical heritage. And I can do that through teaching. It's not just teaching the techniques. I also like to teach the history and evolution behind the techniques. That is generally what my clinics are about." - client Daniel Glass
Facebook admitted to artificially inflating its video stats. It is a reminder that sometimes there is not much difference between a social media company report and the average online dating profile. Both have the kind of exaggerations normally only found in Greek mythology. "The social networking site PDQ announced that every post on its site is read by one million people. They also said that their CEO recently defeated a 20 foot tall cyclops using only his brute strength and a carrot peeler."
Most people put less thought into their social media posts than they do into the end-user license agreements they click through. "What do you mean the software company can now legally shoot my pets?!"
If you put a few minutes of care and thought into what you are posting, your social media content will be at a much higher level than most people's. - Cris Back when I worked in radio, an older DJ gave me the advice, "Start out like you can stay out."
That advice works for social media as well. You have to be able to endure over the long haul. So many bands and businesses create one great post and then have no idea what to say the other 364 days of the year. Cris: What is the key to having a long career as a musician?
