Musical Ingenuity

An interesting bit of information I came across on the site thisdayinmusic.com -- "1969, Police in Moscow reported that thousands of public phone booths had been vandalised after thieves were stealing parts of the phones to convert their acoustic guitars to electric. A feature in a Russian youth magazine had shown details on how to do this."

I had no idea that was even possible. And while I don't support vandalism, I appreciate the ingenuity involved in converting an acoustic guitar using parts from a telephone.

Last night I watched the documentary "Muscle Shoals". Very cool. And I don't think that you need to be a music junkie like me to appreciate it. It's an amazing story about this small town and a small collection of people in that town that provided the sound for some of the greatest songs ever recorded, everyone from Aretha Franklin and Etta James to The Rolling Stones and Paul Simon.

Experts in art or just widgets

I read a great line recently, an analysis by someone (I forget who) about why record companies are having such a difficult time with the transition the industry is going through. He said that most record companies didn't really know how to sell music, they only knew how to sell compact discs. How much of that would you say is true and how much of that would you classify as an over-simplification?
